Curriculum Intent and Rationale
Our Wellbeing curriculum enables students to develop powerful knowledge, skills and attributes they need to recognise and maintain or improve their mental and physical wellbeing. Our bespoke curriculum builds on knowledge from year to year to develop mindful, self-aware young people, who are inquisitive and who are emotionally literate. The curriculum is themed around a positive approach to understanding the challenges students and the wider communities may encounter. Resources and content have been informed by research in personal wellbeing, and pastoral experience within the school.
Implementing our curriculum
Key Stage 3 and 4
In Years 7 to 11, students are taught Wellbeing by their Form Tutor, Head of Year, or another member of experienced staff. Years 7 – 9 have two lessons per fortnight, and Years 10 and 11 have one lesson per fortnight. The content of the Wellbeing lessons alternates each half term between Wellbeing and Careers and Enterprise Education (CEE).
Our Wellbeing curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes, and to understand and appreciate alternative views and attitudes which they may encounter in their wider communities. It encourages students to consider issues and attitudes which affect their and others’ wellbeing at various stages of their development, and within wider society. Our sessions are primarily discussion-based, encouraging pupils to share their views and draw conclusions independently, with the mediation and support of a trusted adult.
We provide a coherent, spiral programme, designed to fit in with student experience at various stages of their emotional development
