Curriculum Intent and Rationale
Creating long life engagement in Physical activity by delivering our 3 P’s vision of –
- Confident to participate
- Commitment to progress
- Opportunities to perform
At Five School sport plays an integral part of school life and personal development for many students. School sport promotes lifelong participation in exercise alongside skills in leadership, teamwork and commitment. We aim for students to achieve personal goals whether they are elite performance or just the enjoyment of participation. With a broad range of both curriculum and extra-curricular activities available to pupils, there are many opportunities for our pupils to get involved in sport (participate), develop talents (progress) and fulfil their potential (performance).
The core curriculum structure is divided into PE lessons and afternoon Games lessons which develops depth in performance groups alongside our breadth in participation groups to create longlife engagement. The PE programme (Key Stage 3 and 4) is progressive so that during the latter years, whilst developing skills in greater depth, it should encourage greater participation in full game situations. PE examination studies developed into KS4 and 5 enhance a further in depth love of sport, performance levels and career progression into an ever expanding sector.
Our aim as PE teachers is to inspire and encourage pupils of all abilities to participate in all aspects of PE. We deliver the Head, Heart, Hands approach to learning where pupils can demonstrate their knowledge and understanding (Head), develop fitness levels and leadership skills (Heart) and finally their ability to execute and perform in competition (Hands).
The opportunity for taking part in extracurricular activities is made available to all by developing and encouraging physical engagement in a breadth of sporting activities available. We also proudly fulfil a huge fixture list in a range of sports giving opportunities to compete and create long life memories. www.kefwsport.org
Implementing our curriculum

In year 8, pupils receive 2 PE lessons and 4 Games lessons per fortnight; PE consists of Swimming, dance, Badminton and health related fitness. Our double lesson in games afternoons deliver invasion sports (Autumn & Spring term) and bat & ball sports (Summer term)
In year 9 pupils receive 2 PE lessons and 4 Games lessons per fortnight; PE consists of Swimming, Spinning fitness classes, Badminton and health related fitness. Our double lesson in games afternoons deliver invasion sports (Autumn & Spring term) and bat & ball sports (Summer term).
All activities studied have a clear Head, Heart, Hands thread to delivery and will aim to gain knowledge and skills of;
- Developing techniques and improve performance levels.
- Use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in competitive situations through individual and teams performances.
- Gain knowledge and understanding of a variety of sports.
- Encourage to work in a team, building on trust and developing skills to solve problems by analysing performances.
- Staying physically active for sustained periods of time
- Create long life engagement by either recreational participation or taking part in competitive sports inside or outside school through community links and sports links.
The PE & Games programme is progressive so that during the latter years, whilst developing skills in greater depth, it should encourage greater participation in full game situations.
Key Stage 4
Specification: AQA GCSE PE
Students in PE follow the AQA GCSE PE specification. Students have 5 lessons a fortnight and by the end of key stage 4, we intend students to gain significant specialist subject knowledge in physical training, anatomy and physiology, movement analysis, sports psychology, social cultural influences and finally, wellbeing.
For the practical assessment, students are required to offer 3 activities – one team, one individual, plus either a team or individual sport. Terminology and Sports studied in KS3 develops a solid foundation to progress further in more depth in a full competitive context. Students will independently recall theoretical concepts learnt to analyse their own performances and apply in greater depth towards the NEA element of the course.

GCSE PE builds on the knowledge and skills acquired and developed at key stage 3. PE is constantly evolving and new contemporary topics will help students of all abilities to develop a well rounded skill set and prepare them for progression to further studies.
We have chosen an exam board that offers students the chance to study a wide range of PE related topics, with more opportunities for practical choice and learning.
In GCSE PE lessons, pupils will have the opportunity to:
- Learning how to describe and analyse elite performances using technical vocabulary.
- Discuss and evaluate PE related topics in depth.
- Use data to analyse and evaluate areas of study.
- Understand the science behind movement.
- Learning how the mind works to underpin high performance levels.
- Tackling contemporary issues in sport and impacts on fitness, health and wellbeing.
- Learning how to structure and compose topics to evaluate or discuss.
As well as preparing students for the rigours of examinations, students will continue to explore up to date key issues, discussions and debates in sport related topics such as equality, drugs or commercialisation in sport. Furthermore, enrichment sporting trips and webinars have also given our students further depth that enables our students to use their deep knowledge to evaluate, analyse or justify questions posed.
Additionally students in Yr 10 & 11 have a games afternoon once a week, covering activities such as Netball, Rugby, Hockey, Badminton, Fitness, tennis, Cricket, Rounders.
Key Stage 5
Specification: AQA A-Level PE
A level PE builds on the knowledge and skill taught at GCSE level. Although studying GCSE PE is not essential, having an interest in sport and ability in one main sport is very advantageous. PE and Sport are constantly evolving with technology, complementary issues, commercialisation, Sports Science and performance levels ever changing. At A level, we have chosen an exam board that is designed to give our students the chance to study a wide range of sporting topics to aid further studies or employment. AQA A level PE brings theory and practical performances to life in an engaging way to inspire future careers.
A level PE follows the AQA PE specification. Students will have 10 lessons a fortnight where we aim to make sure PE students have the skills, knowledge and love of sports studies.
Students will gain significant subject knowledge in
- Anatomy and physiology
- Skill acquisition
- Sports history
- Biomechanical analysis
- Sports psychology
- The role of technology in sport.
Students will increase their level of independence studies towards further reading material required and analysing their own practical performances as part of the NEA element of the course.
Educational trips and specific webinars give our students the opportunity to go into greater depth and understanding of course concepts, theories and more crucially further career aspirations. A level PE provides the foundations for many of our students to undertake sports degrees and beyond in this ever growing industry.
In year 12 and 13 students have the opportunity to participate in performance sports on Wednesday afternoons in Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Football and Cricket.
